A striking vintage Senufo bronze mask from Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa, featuring an elongated face, strong geometric features and a beautifully aged patina.
The Senufo peoples of West Africa have a rich tradition of figurative and mask-making arts associated with community, ceremony and ancestral traditions. This later decorative example draws upon that sculptural vocabulary and was created using the lost-wax casting technique.
Substantial and highly sculptural, the mask works beautifully as a collected art object—displayed on a stand, layered into a bookshelf or console arrangement, or mounted as dimensional wall art. Its dark aged surface and hand-cast character give it particular presence in both contemporary and collected interiors.
